The Greater Houston Builders Association’s Sales & Marketing Council (SMC), and HomeAid Houston are partnering with Bridging Tech to provide refurbished computers to Houston area students affected by homelessness.
Bridging Tech is a 501(c)(3) non-profit public charity with a mission to bridge the digital divide and help children affected by homelessness embrace their education to rise from poverty. By providing school-aged children with laptops for learning, donations will help students access the resources they need to fully interact within the technical world.
HomeAid is asking for gently used 2014 or later laptops and tablets with cords that can be refurbished for student use. The equipment drive will be June 18th and 19th from 10 am to 3 pm at the GHBA offices. The goal is to have the refurbished equipment in the hands of a school-aged child at the start of the school year.
In the US alone, 11 million students do not have access to a device for learning at home. This disproportionately affects already disadvantaged individuals and perpetuates generational cycles of inequity.
“This collaboration was initiated by the GHBA’s Sales & Marketing Council and was an incredible opportunity to address the huge need within our community for disadvantaged children,” said James Miller, president of HomeAid Houston. “We were honored and excited to be able to partner with the SMC to ensure more children are given the chance for a better education by opening the doors to knowledge through technology.”
HomeAid Houston is a 501 c 3 charity of the Greater Houston Builders Association. The agency has been building transformational housing for non-profit care providers throughout Houston and surrounding counties since 2003. The first shelter was dedicated in 2005. Since then, more than 70 projects, large and small have been completed, adding over 400 beds and over $14 million in real estate construction and improvements to Houston’s homeless community.
